NEPO Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The North East Procurement Organisation (NEPO) has marked its 40th anniversary with an awards ceremony to celebrate its contribution to local government procurement in the region.

The event took place on 9 November 2016 at NEPO’s offices on Newcastle’s quayside and was attended by representatives from North East local authorities and the region’s business community.

Established in 1976, NEPO works in partnership with North East local authorities to deliver a programme of strategic procurement in order to maximise savings, identify efficiencies and promote best practice.

Ross Smith, Director of Policy at the North East England Chamber of Commerce said:

“I have worked closely with NEPO for a number of years, most recently as Chair of its Stakeholder Engagement Group. Over this time there have been a number of key developments that demonstrate NEPO’s commitment to supporting the region’s supply base:

Last year the NEPO Business Club delivered free tendering training to over 1,000 suppliers. NEPO and its local authority members spent £1.3BN with suppliers in the region - that’s 62% of their total expenditure. The number of North East suppliers contracted to supply NEPO’s solutions has increased by 64%. since 2014. I look forward to working with NEPO to build on these achievements.”

Councillor Veronica Dunn (NEPO Committee Chair) added:

“NEPO has evolved over the past 40 years to become the strategic hub for collaborative procurement for North East local authorities. The organisation works across high-spend areas such as Energy and Construction to harness the region’s significant spending power and deliver value-for-money procurement solutions without compromising quality. Last year alone saw NEPO deliver over £3.2M savings to its local authority members. In addition NEPO has worked hard to ensure that procurement delivers social and economic benefits and has introduced a Social Value policy and toolkit to embed this objective. The anniversary event was an opportunity to reflect on this and other successes; procurement teams across North East local government should be extremely proud of everything they have achieved through the NEPO partnership.”
