General Data Protection Regulation

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will be effective from 25 May 2018 and includes new and significantly enhanced requirements when compared to the Data Protection Act 1998, with particular emphasis on consent, stronger data rights for individuals, and organisations now being required to evidence compliance. The UK’s Data Protection Bill was also laid before parliament on 14 September 2017 and will, as a minimum, ensure that a post-Brexit UK has in place a data protection regime that mirrors the GDPR . Both the Bill and the GDPR must be read side by side to give the complete picture of data protection in the UK.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) have published a guide to the GDPR on their website, this also includes a number of handy tools to help organisations prepare for May 2018, including a ‘Getting ready for the GDPR checklist’ and ‘GDPR:12 Steps to take now’.
