Case Study: NEPO Business Club results in success for Gateshead SME

In this case study Tony Cartledge, Company Director at HT Media explains how his participation in NEPO's supplier development programme delivered positive results for his Gateshead-based SME.

Established in 2002, HT Media are a video producer and animation house based in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear with five employees plus freelancers. The SME has a track record of creating high quality corporate videos across a range of sectors and work with clients such as NHS Improvement, NHS Blood and Transplant and The Coal Authority.

The challenge
Whilst in the process of writing a bid, HT Media were keen to seek out an expert opinion, with the aim of competing for opportunities more effectively and improving overall standards on forthcoming bids.

The approach
As a registered user of the NEPO Portal, the e-tendering system used by NEPO and the twelve North East local authorities, HT Media received details of the NEPO Business Club programme of support for organisations interested in doing business with the public sector. They booked on to a free of charge Procurement Surgery where they received tailored 1:1 support from Garry Stone from B2B: North. Garry offered practical advice on the tendering process, and a valuable perspective on what that buying organisation was looking for.

The outcome
The learning and development acquired through attending this event resulted in HT Media winning the contract and achieving top marks in each section. The company were delighted with the outcome, and said:

"I would highly recommend the NEPO Business Club events to local SMEs. The session gave us unmatched advice which put us in the best position to achieve tender success.

"In addition to receiving practical tips, we also learnt the importance of selling our ability to carry out the work confidently, whilst being mindful of the client’s needs. We now feel well equipped to tackle future competitive opportunities from the public sector and beyond.”
