2017 NEPO Supplier Survey

Every year NEPO undertakes a Supplier Survey so that we can ensure that arrangements are in place to give a strong business focus, add value to procurement activity and support the growth of the North East economy. The survey is issued to organisations that have participated in tendering activity over the last 12 months.

The 2017 survey took place in May 2017. NEPO would like to thank the 224 businesses who took the time to respond to the survey. The survey findings have been analysed and an action plan is being developed to address gaps and drive improvements. In the meantime we would like to share some of the top findings:

1) The survey asked whether local and regional procurement meets the needs of bidders. 83% of submissions responded positively. This was the first time we asked this question and the high level of positive responses is very encouraging. NEPO will continue to build on this strong foundation.

2) Our tendering supply base is changing. There has been a shift away from large companies to small and medium sized enterprises interested in tendering for NEPO and local authority contracts.

3) NEPO undertakes market consultation for all procurements. This can take a variety of forms such as an event, online survey or one to one meetings. 93% of respondents thought that pre-procurement market consultation events are useful to them.

4) 76% of suppliers are unaware that there have been changes to procurement processes and new regulations have come into force.

5) Barriers businesses perceive when tendering are; competing against incumbent suppliers, competing against larger suppliers and finding relevant contracting opportunities.

6) 72% of respondents were unaware of the NEPO Business Club which offers a range of free workshops and events to support North East businesses to win public sector contracts.
